CHAPTER TEN

"Lara, wake up."

From the delicious depths of sleep, Lara heard the order, but ignored it. Why should she leave this cozy, safe place where time stood still and where she was happy?

Happy? She puzzled on that thought. It had been so long since she'd experienced happiness.

The voice came again, blaring into her soul. "You must beware. Evil."

This psychic splash of cold water shocked her into full consciousness. Wow, what a way to wake up. Intending to bounce out of bed ready to fight nebulous evil, Lara tried to move, but couldn't. She opened her eyes to find Stuart sleeping next to her with his strong arm curved around her waist.

Stuart. She smiled. So he was the reason for her confinement...and contentment. Stuart was her cozy safe place. Instead of leaving bed, she snuggled against him, soaking up his sensuous warmth.

But a tendril of fear wormed its way into her pleasure. What about the warning of evil? Who could relax knowing someone from the beyond was sending warning messages?

Lara inched out from under Stuart's sleeping embrace. Brrr. Chilly morning air iced her skin. She spotted his discarded shirt and used it as a robe. Now she was enveloped in Stuart's masculine scent once again. It caressed her, teasing her to return to his side.

A brief grin lifted her lips. Maybe later. She glanced around to get her bearings. Streams of sunlight filtered in through cracks in the window drapes, giving the bedroom a dusty glow. The satin pillowed divan remained bare of blankets, meaning Stuart must've slept with her all night.

Mmmm.

She glanced at him again, sighed, then tore her gaze away. Work before pleasure. What time was it? Blue numerals on the clock-radio showed it to be a quarter until seven.

Lara continued her survey. The granite fireplace was cold; the switch to ignite the flames remained in the off position. Everything seemed normal. Nothing out of place, nothing dangerous lurked behind the corners.

So what was the warning about? And who sent it?

She shrugged. She hadn't recognized the frequency, which meant it hadn't been Anna Marie, Davina Dulce, Violetta Fitzpatrick, or even the spirit who had a message for Stuart. And yet the subtle authoritative tone had seemed familiar....

Stuart stirred in bed, prompting Lara to action. She tiptoed to the door, slowly opened it, and slipped out into the dimly lit hallway. Next stop: the bathroom.

Darn. The bathroom door was closed. But no light illuminated the edges of the door. Maybe it wasn't occupied.

She took a look around the empty hallway, then gently rapped on the door. No answer. She rapped louder. Still nothing.

Good. Opening the door, she went inside and turned on the switch.

The instant brightness made her blink. Mirrors, paneling the walls, increased the light's intensity. Her gaze traveled over the marble-topped vanity and over to the enameled bathtub encased in matching marble... then froze. She blinked again.

"Ohhh--" Her fist cut off her scream.

Fergus Fitzpatrick bobbed in the deep water. He didn't mind the interruption; he'd never mind anything ever again.
